Passion Play 2010
Putting on the Passion Play
Packages available for groups and individuals.
Ash Wednesday: Around the Christian world, this day marks the beginning of the Lenten season. For some it is merely the end of Carnival or Mardi Gras. For the villagers of Oberammergau, Ash Wednesday 2009 was the so-called “barber date.” On this day, a municipal decree was handed down, as it has been for four centuries: men could not shave and all townspeople could not cut their hair. This is the beginning of Oberammergau’s transformation from 21st century Bavarian village to a city in the Ancient Near East. By Christmas 2009, the local police look like hippies and the doctors look like shamans. Schoolboys are sporting ponytails and the butcher bears a strange resemblance to Judas. No where else in the world does an entire community put so much dedication into a single project as here during the Passion Play season. Any person born here or residing here for 20 years is eligible to be part of the production. All hone their skills as seamstresses, set makers, stagehands, actors or musicians and are driven by a pledge made by their ancestors in the 17th century. This is no amateur night; the performances are world-class. And if you see a short-haired man on the streets of Oberammergau, chances are he is playing a Roman…
