Passion Play 2010
HISTORY OF THE PASSION PLAY
Packages available for groups and individuals.
Nothing was feared more by 17th century Europeans than than the Plague. It affected populations in Constantinople and London, Lisbon and Krakow. Tiny villages were wiped off the map. Solutions were employed that were often more harmful than the disease itself. Chaos reigned. In this atmosphere, the good people of Oberammergau prayed for their lives. In the Bavarian plains north of the Alps, the Plague was mowing down hamlets, villages and cities. No one was spared. The villagers of Oberammergau prayed. They prayed very hard. They vowed to the Lord that if their home was spared the ravages of the Plague that they would perform a Play depicting the Passion of the Christ. And repeat it every decade for eternity. Oberammergau was spared and the villagers kept their solemn promise. Every decade since 1634, a Passion Play has been performed in Oberammergau by the residents of the village. 2010 is the 41st season of the Play.
