Passion Play 2010
HISTORY OF oberammergau
Packages available for groups and individuals.
The beauty of the village of Oberammergau is that it is so simple. It lies in an Alpine valley surrounded by granite peaks and evergreen forests. It is a farming community. Tractors make their way through town. There are still cowbarns near the main square. Fresh milk is collected every dawn. At night, the loudest noise is the rush of the Ammer river bringing glacial water through the valley. There are no cathedrals or castles or fortresses. The only clue that something special goes on here is the Passion Play Theater, a 4500-seat venue built specifically for an event that happens every ten years. On Play days, the village is bustling with theater-goers visiting shops and cafes, walking the tiny streets or sunning in the rose gardens. When the Play is actually in performance the streets are eerily quiet; everyone is either in the audience or on stage. Look closely: Pontius Pilate may be serving you in the local café!
